Arctic Skipper

Yesterday, the back yard was filled with Yellow Swallowtail Butterflies, Black Swallowtail Butterflies and Monarchs.  On long, easy wing beats, they traveled an invisible highway that ran along the rick-rack fence.  They did not stop or tarry, but traveled the length of the fence and were gone.  It seemed that they were headed to some distant destination.

Today, the imaginary highway was being traveled by Arctic Skippers (Carterocephalus palaemon).  They, however, were not in a hurry.  Like tourists, they turned and returned to every flower, stem and fence post, as if searching for the best place to stop for a bite to eat or a place to rest.
