Common Cinquefoil

One of the first flowers I encountered when I moved to Vermont was the "Five Toes".  I found them in the backyard, in the meadows and in the back woods.

I have just come to realize that "Five Toes" is not a flower, but a family of flowers.  And, that there are five common types of "Five Toes" found in Vermont.  Trying to sort them all out has been a bit of a challenge.  I have also realized that it pays to get a little closer to the ground and to have a really good wildflower key.

Today as I was walking in the woods, I found this member of the "Five Toes" family -- the Common Cinquefoil (Potentilla simplex).  It was not the same as the ones I had seen before.

I will have to wait a few more weeks for the Sulfur Cinquefoil to appear.
