Bitternut Hickory

The Bitternut Hickory (Carya cordiformis), also known as the Swamp Hickory, is a member of the "pecan-like hickories".  It is common in the eastern United States and is found in moist soils.

It has alternate-compound leaves with 7 to 11 leaflets.  The fruit is round with distinctive ridges.  The husk is thin and does not separate from the nut in the winter.

Unlike the delicious fruit of the Pecan, the nuts of the Bitternut Hickory are unpalatable to both humans and wildlife.
