Jagged Ambush Bug on Queen Anne's Lace

The Jagged Ambush Bug (Phymata pennsylvanica) is a master of camouflage.  Able to blend in with the back ground of the flower on which is rest, it lies in wait for unsuspecting insects -- some up to ten times its size.

While incredibly small, it is able to use its large powerful front claws to grasp and subdue its prey.  The Ambush Bug then injects a poison into its victim -- paralyzing it and liquefying its internal contents.  Which the Ambush Bug then drinks.

To gain an appreciation for this predators size, the speck in the upper-right corner of the picture is the dark, central floret characteristic of Queen Anne's Lace (Daucus carota)
