Spotted Touch-me-not

Spotted Touch-me-not (Impatiens capensis) or Spotted Jewelweed is a plant native to the eastern half of the United States.  It tends to be found in moist soils of woods, swamps and marshes.

It is an important food source for hummngbirds, bees and butterflies, that likewise assist in its pollination.

It disperses its seeds from "exploding" seed pods in the fall.  As the fruit pods dry and shrink, they create a tense pressure around the seeds.  When touched, the pods burst, dispersing the seeds great distances.  Thus the name, Touch-me-nots.
