Bedstraw Hawk Moth Caterpillar

The Bedstraw Hawk Moth or Galium Sphinx Moth (Hyles gallii) caterpillar has a olive-green to dark brown body with characteristic yellow eye spots circled with black and a bright red "horn" at the tail.

The Bedstraw Hawk Moth is common to the northeastern portion of the United States.  It can be found in meadows, roadsides and gardens.

Bedstraw Hawk Moth caterpillars have a preference for members of the Bedstraw family (Galium) of plants -- hence the name.  They pupate and overwinter in underground cocoons.

Moths emerge from May to August and can often be seen flying around outdoor lights on dark summer evenings.
