Brown Cup Fungus

The cup fungi (Peziza) are a large group of fungi that grow on or around rotting wood.  They tend to grow in clusters.  Their name is derived from the Latin word for foot -- as they lack a stalk.

While it was once thought that they were decomposers, it now appears that they may play a part in symbiotic relationships with certain trees.

Determining individual species of cup mushrooms requires input from a cup mushroom expert.
