The Pearl Crescent Butterfly (Phyciodes tharos) is one of the most common butterflies found in the open areas across North America.
Identification can be somewhat frustrating as its color pattern is highly variable. In general, its uppersides are orange with black borders and the underside of the hindwing are pale with a dark marginal patch and a light colored crescent. The pattern appears to become darker throughout the season.
The larvae eat several species of aster. Adults feed on the nectar from a wide variety of flowers.
