Non-luminous Fireflies

The Black Firefly (Lucidota atra) is a common "firefly" of open woodlands and wet or swampy areas in the northeastern United States.

While fireflies or lightning bugs are known for their "flashing lights" or use of bioluminescence during the night, not all fireflies produce light.  Adults Black Fireflies are diurnal (active during the day) and do not produce light.  Instead they communicate using pheromones like many other insects.
